Treating Charcot Joint Disease (Neuroarthropathy)

An estimated 1 out of 700 patients with diabetes will develop a condition called Charcot joint disease, which is characterized by a particular pattern of bone destruction that usually follows an undetected injury to the foot or ankle.

At Advanced Foot & Ankle Clinic, we know what to look for and how to treat diabetic patients with this and other injuries to the lower extremities.

Protecting You Against Misdiagnoses

Charcot joint disease usually makes itself known through unexplained swelling in your foot or ankle. Due to an underlying loss of feeling in the foot, the swelling is often painless. You also may see redness at the top of the foot or ankle.

Because misdiagnosis is common, our physicians will take great care during your examination. They will check for warmth in the general area and grinding in the joints. X-rays and bone scans will be approved as needed. CT scans or MRI are rarely necessary unless reconstructive surgery is planned.

Early Diagnosis & Treatment Is Critical

Once we detect Charcot joint disease, we'll aim to immobilize your foot and ankle and to render it free of weight-bearing functions. Often crutches or a walker will be involved, as well as a cast or brace.

Once serial X-rays or other exam techniques indicate that healing is taking place, protected weight-bearing functions will be resumed. A close watch will be made regarding foot and ankle deformity, foot ulcerations, and instability.

Sometimes surgery may be required to deal with ulcerations and instability.
